Anything with platters gets worked on here — today's NAS and surveillance drives right back to IDE disks pulled from PCs retired twenty years ago. Seagate Barracudas are notorious for firmware and translator faults and BSY lock-ups; WD drives lose heads after a knock and suffer PCB burnout from power surges; Hitachi, HGST and Toshiba 2.5" drives develop weak, slow-reading heads; and legacy Maxtor DiamondMax disks tend to seize their motors after years sitting idle.
Hitachi's Deskstar and Travelstar lines, inherited from IBM in 2003, and the HGST-badged drives that followed once the division joined Western Digital are still among the most numerous disks posted to us in Staines from older desktops and laptops. Their head stacks tend to fail one head at a time, so the imagers harvest each platter surface separately, banking everything the strong heads can reach before a matched donor assembly takes over for whatever remains. Deskstar, Travelstar and Ultrastar models across every capacity generation go through the same process.
Seagate's Barracuda family has a well-documented soft spot in its service-area firmware: the drive spins up normally yet stays silent to the computer, or appears with no capacity listed at all. Faults like these are rarely mechanical — the damaged firmware modules are rebuilt over the drive's diagnostic terminal without the platters ever being exposed. A Barracuda that begins clicking after a fall is a different case, needing a donor head assembly fitted in the clean bench before imaging starts, and both routes are daily work here.
Western Digital's portable range is an ecosystem of its own: inside a My Passport or Elements, the USB socket sits directly on the drive's controller board and the data passes through hardware encryption on its way to the platters. A failed board is therefore never a simple case swap — we repair or transplant the electronics with the encryption keys preserved, then image the drive as normal. Many recent WD models also develop congested service areas that leave a drive detected but crawling, cleared with firmware-level access before the copy is taken.
Neither badge has appeared on a new hard drive in years — Maxtor was absorbed by Seagate in 2006 and Samsung's drive division followed in 2011 — yet SpinPoint and DiamondMax disks still come out of lofts and old towers holding the only copy of a family's photos. Long storage creates its own faults, from read-write assemblies adhered to the platter surface to spindle lubricant stiffened with age, and both are dealt with in the clean bench before any imaging. The legacy benches keep IDE and early-SATA adapters and donor parts for both makers, so an obsolete drive is not an unrecoverable one.

Is the drive still inside a computer, laptop or server? Open the machine at your end and post the bare drive on its own, as drive removal isn't a service we provide — it's usually a matter of a few screws. Storage soldered to a motherboard is outside what we recover; it has to be a drive that can be removed and sent in.
Most customers post their media to us tracked and insured.
Sending a drive from a computer, laptop, MacBook, iMac, CCTV / DVR or server? Please remove the internal hard drive or SSD and send us just the drive — we don't provide an internal drive-removal service. We don't recover storage soldered to a motherboard (e.g. Apple Silicon Macs and some thin laptops) — only drives that can be removed and sent to us.
