Every nvme job starts by matching the symptoms to the fault — these twelve cover almost everything that reaches the bench.

Disappears after sleep or restart

A controller or firmware fault drops the drive off the bus — it's there one boot and gone the next, with the data intact behind it.

Not detected in BIOS

Dead controller, failed power circuitry or corrupted boot firmware — the NAND usually still holds everything.

Shows 0MB or wrong capacity

Translator corruption: the drive answers but reports a nonsense size instead of your data.

Won't boot — 'no bootable device'

The system NVMe has dropped out; documents are recovered directly from the drive.

Overheating then dropping offline

NVMe runs hot and throttles or disconnects without a heatsink — repeated thermal events corrupt the mapping.

Failed firmware or Windows update

An interrupted update corrupts the drive's tables and it stops identifying correctly.

NVMe fails differently — and faster

An NVMe drive is a compact M.2 stick that talks straight to the processor over the PCIe bus, which makes it blisteringly quick and unusually unforgiving when it goes wrong. There's no clicking and no warning — the drive is present one boot and gone the next. Behind the connector sits a controller running dense firmware over stacked NAND, and when the controller or firmware trips, the drive vanishes completely even though your data is sitting intact in the memory. Recovery means reaching it through the controller's service mode, or reading the NAND directly and rebuilding the mapping in software.

We recover M.2 2280, 2242 and 2230 sticks and PCIe add-in cards — Samsung, WD, Crucial, Kingston, Corsair, Sabrent, Kioxia and Solidigm — provided the drive can be removed and sent to us. We don't recover NVMe storage soldered to a motherboard. Overheating is a frequent trigger (NVMe runs hot and throttles or drops out without a heatsink), along with firmware bugs and failed updates. Whatever the cause, the diagnostic tells you exactly what's recoverable before you spend a penny.

NVMe drives on the bench most weeks

M.2 2280, 2242 and 2230 sticks, PCIe add-in cards and U.2 enterprise drives — Gen3, Gen4 and Gen5 all covered, as long as the drive can be removed and sent to us. Samsung 970/980/990 drives can drop off the bus after a firmware fault; WD Black SN770 and SN850 sticks suffer known firmware bugs that trigger sudden capacity loss; and any NVMe run without a heatsink can throttle, overheat and corrupt its mapping. We don't recover NVMe soldered to a motherboard.

Post or courier your device — it's simple

Most customers post or courier their media to us.

Sending a drive from a computer, laptop, MacBook, iMac, CCTV / DVR or server? Please remove the internal hard drive or SSD and send us just the drive — we don't provide an internal drive-removal service. We don't recover storage soldered to a motherboard (e.g. Apple Silicon Macs and some thin laptops) — only drives that can be removed and sent to us.

  • Wrap the device in bubble wrap or a padded envelope — no need to include cables or power supplies.
  • Print and enclose the booking-in & shipping form (PDF) with your name, phone number and a brief description of what happened.
  • Send by Royal Mail Special Delivery or any tracked courier for full insurance in transit.
  • Prefer to hand it over in person? You can drop it in at reception at the address shown, Mon–Fri 9:00am–5:30pm.

Common questions

Usually not. A sudden disappearance is almost always a controller or firmware fault rather than dead memory — your data is typically intact in the NAND and can be reached through service mode or a direct chip-level read.
No. We only recover NVMe drives that can be removed and posted in — if the storage is soldered to the motherboard we no longer offer recovery, because the success rate on soldered storage was too low to promise anyone. Removable M.2 sticks we recover as normal.
Often, yes. No-detection points to the controller, firmware or power circuitry rather than the data itself. The free diagnostic identifies which fault you have and what the recovery costs.
It makes it harder — TRIM clears freed blocks in the background. If files were deleted recently, power the machine off immediately and send it in; the sooner it stops, the better the odds.
