The ways a RAID 5 goes down

RAID 5 survives a single lost disk — but only one. These are the failures that bring an array to the bench.

Second drive fails during a rebuild

RAID 5 tolerates one lost disk, but rebuilding onto a replacement hammers the ageing survivors for hours. A second drive dropping mid-rebuild is the classic way a recoverable array becomes an emergency.

Controller or backplane failure

A dead RAID controller, HBA or backplane can take the whole array offline even though every disk is healthy. The configuration and parity metadata have to be read before the volume can be rebuilt.

A stale, out-of-sync drive

When a disk drops out and the array runs degraded, that member goes stale. Forcing it back online later mixes old and new data and corrupts the parity across the set.

Silent degradation / multiple bad sectors

Unnoticed bad sectors on more than one member mean parity can't cover every stripe. We image around the damage before any rebuild is attempted.

Accidental re-initialise or reconfiguration

Re-creating the array, initialising it, or a well-meaning 'repair' from the dashboard can overwrite the metadata that describes exactly how your data is laid out.

Failed expansion or migration

Capacity expansions and RAID-level migrations that stall part-way leave the array in an inconsistent state that simply won't mount.

Imaged first, rebuilt virtually

We never work on your original disks. Every member drive is cloned to a stable image with hardware imagers, and any physically failing disk is repaired in the clean-air lab first. From those images we determine the exact disk order, block size, rotation and parity direction, rebuild the array virtually, and extract your files — leaving your original disks untouched as a fallback.

Why you shouldn't rebuild onto suspect disks

The instinct after a RAID 5 failure is to slot in a new disk and let the controller rebuild. On an array that has already lost its redundancy, that rebuild puts maximum stress on the remaining drives at exactly the moment they can least take it — and a second failure part-way through turns a straightforward recovery into a far harder one. If a rebuild has already failed, power the system down and don't retry it.

Yes — a failed rebuild is the most common RAID 5 job we see. We image every member drive as it is, then reconstruct the array virtually from those images, so a stalled or failed rebuild doesn't stop the recovery. The key is to stop retrying the rebuild and power the system down.
Usually just the drives. Remove the member disks, label them with their bay order if you can, and send us the full set — every disk in the array, including any that had already failed. If the array uses an unusual controller we may ask for that too, so call us first if you're unsure.
RAID recoveries start from £500 + VAT. Because every member drive is imaged individually before the array is rebuilt, the figure follows the number of disks. You get one fixed written quote after the free diagnostic — see our data recovery cost page for the full breakdown.
A logical rebuild of a healthy set of disks is no fix, no fee. If one or more member drives has electronic, mechanical, physical, water or fire damage, that drive needs invasive work, so 50% of the quote is payable upfront for donor parts and lab time — always set out in writing first.
The free diagnostic is completed within 2 working days of the drives arriving. A straightforward array rebuild is often finished within a week of your go-ahead; more disks, larger capacities or physically damaged members can take longer. Urgent business cases can be prioritised.

Post or courier your device — it's simple

Most customers post or courier their media to us.

Sending a drive from a computer, laptop, MacBook, iMac, CCTV / DVR or server? Please remove the internal hard drive or SSD and send us just the drive — we don't provide an internal drive-removal service. We don't recover storage soldered to a motherboard (e.g. Apple Silicon Macs and some thin laptops) — only drives that can be removed and sent to us.

  • Wrap the device in bubble wrap or a padded envelope — no need to include cables or power supplies.
  • Print and enclose the booking-in & shipping form (PDF) with your name, phone number and a brief description of what happened.
  • Send by Royal Mail Special Delivery or any tracked courier for full insurance in transit.
  • Prefer to hand it over in person? You can drop it in at reception at the address shown, Mon–Fri 9:00am–5:30pm.
