Select Where to Boot From

Her Lenovo laptop stopped booting in a way that has a specific meaning. Using it normally with "repeated prompts to install an update, which I had been postponing", the next day the "screen stayed black for a while and then displayed a message asking me to select where to boot from". An IT colleague said "the laptop could no longer find the drive or location it normally boots from", and she has seen online suggestions about making a bootable USB. A prompt to select a boot device means the laptop cannot find its startup drive — the machine looked for the drive it normally boots from and did not find it, which points at the drive rather than the operating system, and shapes what she should and should not try next.

"Select where to boot from" means the drive the laptop expects is not there. A laptop displays a boot-device selection prompt when it cannot find a bootable drive in its usual place. The colleague's summary is right: the machine looked for the drive it normally boots from and could not find it. Whether that is because the drive is not detected at all, or is detected but no longer readable, is the question — but the boot drive has effectively gone missing to the system.

The fault points at the drive, and the postponed updates are likely a coincidence. It is tempting to blame the update prompts, but a drive becoming undetectable is a hardware or connection matter, not something a postponed software update typically causes. The updates mark the timeline — she was using the machine normally, then it failed overnight — rather than the cause. A drive that was working and then was not found the next day usually has a developing fault that reached its tipping point, independent of the updates.

The bootable-USB idea is the one thing to be cautious about, and this matters most. Online suggestions to create a bootable USB are aimed at repairing or reinstalling an operating system — and if the underlying problem is a failing drive, booting from USB to run repair tools, or worse to reinstall, risks writing to the drive and overwriting recoverable data. Those suggestions solve a different problem than the one she has. Where data matters and the drive may be failing, the safe path is not to attempt boot repairs but to recover the data first.

The route depends on where the fault sits, and the data is reached from an image. If the drive's media is degrading, imaging under retry control secures the readable data first; if the fault is in the drive's firmware, that is addressed to restore detection before imaging. Either way the volume is read from a write-blocked image, not by repeated boot attempts on the laptop, which spend a possibly-failing drive's remaining life.

The honest prognosis is reasonable, and stated before the work. Many boot-device failures turn out to be recoverable, the data intact behind a detection or firmware issue; the harder case is a drive with failing media, whose condition sets the ceiling. That condition is assessed at the outset, with a clear answer on what is recoverable before anything is charged — and the bootable-USB experiments left safely untried.
