The MacBook is the most predictable of the three. An early MacBook Pro uses a standard laptop drive, which is removed and imaged directly rather than fought through an ageing machine that may not boot, and its Mac-format volume read with Apple-aware tools from the image. The only real variable is the drive's physical health after years of service, checked at the outset — but this is familiar work with a familiar shape.
The external's missing cable is a small problem hiding an unknown one. "No power cable" sounds trivial and often is — the right adapter, correctly matched for voltage and polarity, brings many such drives straight back. But powering it only reveals the drive's actual condition, which the absent cable has been masking: the drive could be healthy or independently faulty, unknown until correctly powered and assessed. A mismatched adapter can itself damage a drive, which is why matching it properly matters.
The DVD is a different discipline entirely, and honesty about optical media is important. Discs fail in ways magnetic drives do not: surface scratches scatter the laser, the dye layer that holds the data degrades with age and light — the slow fade that afflicts older recordable discs — and delamination can separate the disc's layers. Recordable DVDs in particular were never a permanent medium, and their dye fades over years. Whether these videos survive depends on which failure has occurred and how far it has gone.
Optical recovery has real techniques, and they are worth applying. Specialist optical drives allow adjustable read strategies, varied laser power and read speeds, and aggressive error correction ordinary players lack, and combining many passes can reconstruct data an ordinary drive gives up on. So a DVD that "does not work" in a normal player is not necessarily lost — it needs the equipment built to fight a struggling disc.
The honest prognosis differs sharply across the three, and is stated per item. The Mac drive and the powered external are likely good, subject to their physical health. The DVD is the genuine unknown — recoverable if the fault is surface or drive-side, far harder if the dye has faded past readability, and that is determined by inspection rather than promised in advance.
