A drive that spins but is detected by nothing has a fault between the working motor and the host handshake — and the possible format is a separate, second question layered on top, so the assessment has to establish which problem, or both, is actually in play.

Spinning is genuinely good news, and precisely bounded good news. A drive that powers and spins has a working motor and a mechanism receiving power — which rules out the total power failures and many mechanical seizures. But spinning only gets the drive to the starting line; being detected requires it to complete a handshake with the host, and that is a further step this drive is not managing. The motor working says the fault lies elsewhere.
Undetected on three different host types points at the drive, not the computer. Failing on Windows, Mac and Android alike eliminates any single operating system, driver, or platform quirk. When nothing anywhere detects a spinning drive, the fault is in the drive's own path to enumeration — commonly the USB bridge board on a portable, a connector, or the drive's firmware.
The My Passport enclosure adds a specific consideration. These portables encrypt on the bridge board in hardware as standard, so the drive inside carries ciphertext. That means the bridge, or its encryption role, must be preserved through the recovery — transplanting the bare drive into a generic caddy would present unreadable encrypted data. The original electronics are retained for exactly this reason, and it is why bridge-level faults on these drives need care rather than a simple swap.
The possible format is a separate question, checked once the drive is accessible. "Possibly formatted" describes the filesystem, not the detection fault — and it may or may not have happened. If the drive was formatted, the prior data typically remains behind the new empty structures, recoverable by rebuilding them or carving the data area. But that only matters after the enumeration fault is fixed and the drive can be read. First access, then the format question.
The two faults are diagnosed in order, and honestly. Step one is restoring detection — repairing or bypassing the bridge, or addressing a firmware fault — so the drive images. Step two, on the image, is assessing whether a format occurred and recovering the data accordingly. Each is established rather than assumed, and the prognosis stated per layer before the work.
The data outlook is reasonable across the likely scenarios. A bridge or connector fault threatens access, not the platters, and a format leaves data behind it — so if the mechanism is sound, as the spinning suggests, both the detection fault and any format are the kind of problems that recover well. The honest exception is a firmware or mechanical fault found on assessment, which is scoped before proceeding.
