Dropped, Buzzing, and Undetected

Her WD Elements took a fall and now announces its injury audibly. Since being dropped it makes a "constant buzzing sound when connected to a PC/laptop", yet "the devices do not detect the external hard drive". She wants to know whether the data can be retrieved. A drop followed by constant buzzing and no detection is impact damage that reached the mechanism — the buzz is a motor straining against something that stops it turning, and the priority now is to stop connecting it, because every attempt to power a buzzing dropped drive risks the platters.

The drop and the buzzing together tell a consistent mechanical story. A healthy drive spins up with a smooth rising whir. A constant buzz is a motor trying and failing to turn the platters — and following a physical drop, the likely reasons are that the impact caused the heads to stick to the platter surface, or damaged or seized the spindle bearing. Either way the mechanism cannot reach operating speed, which is a mechanical fault from the impact, not an electronic or logical one.

Undetected follows directly from a mechanism that will not spin. A drive only presents itself to a host once the platters are turning and the heads can read. A buzzing drive never reaches that state, so no computer detects it — the absence of detection is a symptom of the stalled mechanism, not a separate fault. This is why more connection attempts change nothing except the drive's remaining life.

Every powered connection now spends the recovery, and this is the urgent part. A stalled motor draws heavy current and heats, and if the heads are stuck to the platters, each attempt to spin drags them across the surface — the single fastest way to scratch the platters and convert a recoverable case into a partial or total loss. The most valuable thing she can do costs only restraint: stop connecting it, and let it see only current-limited, monitored power under laboratory control.

Stiction and seizure are laboratory-routine, which frames the outlook. Freeing heads stuck to a platter, or moving platters to a donor mechanism where a bearing has seized, is careful clean-air work with a known shape — not an exotic rescue. The presentation sounds alarming, but the underlying faults are among the more familiar ones a laboratory addresses, provided the drive has not been run to the point of surface damage.

The platters set the honest ceiling, and the drop is what puts them at risk. If the heads stuck or the bearing seized but the surfaces are undamaged, freeing or replacing the affected parts restores reading and the data comes back. If the impact — or prior buzzing attempts — already marked the platters, recovery narrows to the intact regions. Which applies is determined by inspection under magnification, and stated before the work.

The forward note follows the fault. A drive that has been dropped and mechanically damaged is not to be trusted again whatever the recovery yields — the data goes to reliable storage, ideally in more than one place, and the WD Elements retires once its contents are safe.
