Her cross-device test is the decisive diagnostic, and it deserves credit. The most common question with an unread card is whether the card or the device is at fault. By trying it in a second Samsung phone and a laptop and finding it undetected everywhere, she has already answered that — the card carries its fault with it, so the failure is in the card. That is exactly the right test, and it saves a step.
Sudden total failure on flash media usually means the controller, which is the hopeful reading. A card that worked one moment and was invisible the next has typically lost the controller — the small chip that manages the memory and presents the card to devices. When it fails, the card is detected by nothing, because there is nothing left to answer. An undetected card is beyond every consumer method, which is why nothing she tried helped. MicroSD construction makes this delicate, specialist work. A microSD is monolithic — controller and memory are fused into a single sealed sliver with no separable chip to lift out. Chip-level recovery means locating and contacting the internal test points that reach the raw memory directly, bypassing the dead controller. It is precise work under magnification, and it is the established route when a monolithic card's controller has died.
Raw memory must then be reconstructed, because it is not stored as files. Reading the NAND directly yields a scrambled dump — the controller's private arrangement of error correction, XOR patterns and interleaving. Reconstructing the photos means reversing that arrangement in specialist software to reassemble the images as they were. This is why chip-level recovery is more than just reading the memory; the dump has to be decoded.
The honest fork is controller versus memory, established by assessment. If the controller failed and the memory is intact — the common and hopeful case — the graduation and travel photos are recoverable through chip-level reading and reconstruction. If the memory itself has failed, recovery narrows to whatever survives, which is far less consistent with a card that died all at once. Which applies is determined at assessment and stated before the work.
