The Laptop Deleted Today's Photos During a Copy

She went to save her holiday photos and the transfer turned on her. She put the camera card into her laptop, and "the laptop seemed to think it was still coping files from the previous day" — and in the confusion, "it seems to have deleted all the photos I took today from the memory card". Photos deleted moments ago during a botched copy are among the most recoverable losses there are — deletion removes the reference, not the data, and the single most important thing now is what her account already implies she has done right: stop writing anything further to the card.

The decode

Deletion removes the signpost, not the photograph. When files are deleted, the filesystem marks their directory entries as gone and their space as available — but the actual image data stays on the card, untouched, until something writes over that space. Her photos from today were deleted moments ago, which means they are almost certainly still fully present, simply no longer listed. This is the recoverable end of the spectrum.

Time is the only enemy, and it is measured in writes, not hours. The deleted photos remain recoverable until the space they occupy is reused by new data. On a card no longer being written to, that space stays untouched and the images stay recoverable indefinitely. Every new write — taking more photos, letting a device save anything to the card, even reinserting it into a camera that writes housekeeping data — risks landing on the deleted images and destroying them. Her not continuing to use the card is precisely what preserves the day.

The confused copy operation explains the deletion without changing the outlook. A transfer that behaved as though still copying the previous day's files, then deleted today's, is a muddle in how the software tracked the card — but the effect is a straightforward deletion, and deletions recover well. The odd behaviour is the cause; the recoverable state is the result.

Two recovery routes cover the loss completely. Where the deleted files' references still survive in the filesystem, they are recovered directly with their original detail. Where the references are gone, signature carving finds the image data itself in the card's free space — photographs carry strong, recognisable signatures and carve cleanly. Running both and reconciling them recovers the day whether or not the directory entries survived.

Everything is done on an image, which removes all remaining risk. The card is imaged first under write-blocking, and recovery runs on the copy — so the deleted photos on the original card cannot be overwritten by the recovery process itself, and the original is preserved exactly. This is why professional recovery images before it does anything else.

The prognosis is genuinely encouraging, stated plainly. A recent deletion on an unused card typically returns the lost photos in full. The honest caveat is small: if anything was written to the card after the deletion, some images may be affected, and that is checked from the image and reported by result — but a card set aside promptly, as hers was, gives every reason for optimism about the whole day.

Stop using the card immediately — take no more photos, let no device write to it, and don't reinsert it into a camera, because deleted images survive only until new data overwrites their space. Don't run repair or format prompts. A recent deletion on a card set aside promptly is highly recoverable, and the sooner it stops being written to, the more comes back. Keep it out of service until recovery is done, and afterwards copy the photos somewhere safe before reusing the card.
