The Laptop Was Written Off, but the SSD Was Not

He salvaged the right part and hit the wrong prompt. After an Acer Swift's hinge damaged the LCD cable and forced a shutdown, an "expensive motherboard repair" made the laptop not worth saving, so he bought an enclosure "so that the SSD could be attached externally to another laptop". But "the new laptop doesn't read the SSD", and Disk Management reports it as "Not Initialized". Salvaging the SSD was exactly right, and "Not Initialized" is the one message that must not be acted on — Windows is offering to initialise the disk, and accepting would begin overwriting the very data he moved the drive to save.

Moving the SSD to an enclosure was the correct salvage, and the drive is detected — both good signs. Writing off a laptop for an uneconomic board repair while rescuing the storage is exactly the right call, and that the new laptop detects the SSD at all means the drive powers, communicates, and is seen by the system. The failure is not that the drive is dead; it is that its volume is not presenting, which is a narrower and more recoverable problem.

"Not Initialized" is Windows failing to read the partition table, not a statement that the disk is blank. Disk Management reports a disk as uninitialised when it cannot read the structures that define the disk's partitions. That can happen because the partition table is damaged, or simply because the drive was formatted for a different system that this Windows machine does not read natively. Either way, the data sits intact behind structures Windows cannot currently parse — the disk is not empty, it is unreadable to this host.

The prompt that accompanies the message is the single real danger. Windows offers to initialise the disk to make it usable — and initialising writes a fresh, empty partition structure onto the drive, beginning the process of overwriting the existing data. It is the precise equivalent of the format prompt on a RAW drive: the helpful-sounding option that destroys the recoverable contents. It must be declined, and nothing should be allowed to write to the drive.

The likely causes are mostly benign, which frames the outlook. An SSD pulled from a laptop and put in an enclosure commonly reads fine; when it does not, the usual reasons are a partition table that did not survive the transition cleanly, or a filesystem the new host does not natively read. Both leave the data intact. Recovery reads the structures from an image and rebuilds them where damaged, or reads a foreign filesystem with the right tools — returning files with their organisation.

The SSD's health is checked, because the presentation has more than one cause. Most such cases are purely a structure or format-reading issue, but a failing SSD or a controller problem can present similarly, so the drive's condition is assessed on professional equipment at the outset. The honest prognosis rests on structure-issue versus drive-fault, established before the work — and in the common case, his salvaged data is intact and simply needs its structures read properly.

Do not click initialise — that writes a new empty partition structure and begins overwriting the data you moved the drive to save; it is the equivalent of formatting. The message means Windows can't read the partition table, not that the disk is blank, and your data is intact behind it. Stop replugging the drive to retry, and don't let any disk utility "fix" it. Have it imaged and recovered from a copy, so the structures can be rebuilt without any risk to the original.
